Inter Club Match v Burnham on Crouch - Away - 29th July 2019

Burnham on Crouch       5       Stoke By Nayland        3

Up nice and early and navigated my way to Burnham on Crouch Golf Course. Arrived early , just as well because  I shot past and found myself  right beside the river, never mind turned round and straight into car park on the left.

Match 1

First into battle with Tees drawn was Captain Bickers and Peter Robbins a few stray shots here and there but the  battled back to finish just two down.

Match 2

Dave Hunter and I had a mammoth task going four down in no time but we stuck to it and got back to just one down. This Burnham pair played really well together, they had just two sixes in their round. I refuse to slash my wrists though however it was really nice to play with these two. They deserved their four two victory.

Match 3

Peter Hele and Richard Saunders had a tough battle. I said did you play well Richard, he replied steady, but hang a minute they had strong opposition. To end up halving the match was no mean feat. Going back to his car, Richard tried to decapitate his clubs sticking out of the bag on the back of his buggy, but he stopped just in time thank goodness.

Match 4

Howard Emerson and David Drew battled hard in one of those matches going to and fro, they may have been a tad disappointed, but to finish on a high note Howard whacked in a massive Rocca like putt on the eighteenth. They finished four and three down, know the feeling.

Match 5

Malcolm Norton and Neil Farmer secured a three and two win. Malcolm had an iffy start but brushed that off to follow with three birdies, he also scored forty points. If you fancy a little game for money steer clear of him. Neil backed Malcolm up with some good golf of his own especially as he has had time off lately. Joe's trolley tried to escape but was recaptured.

Match 6

Adrian Cherry and Lionel Hatch, were in good form with a two and one victory. Adrian said we just missed some putts by a fraction we  should have had a lot more, After opening the match with seven each for the half the only was up.

Match 7

Dave Austin and Brian Castle started on seventeen, quite a hike to start with. Our pair played valiantly to keep it all square most of the match but the last few holes went to Burnham. Just two down in a neck and neck match.

Match 8

Bob Filer and Dick Lumsden’s match finished all square after some friendly banter along the way. Something quite bizarre happened on one of the greens. Bob's ball was on the green safely but Dick hit his ball which promptly whacked Bob's ball and sent it off. So Dick's ball was poisoned where Bob's ball was. When they got to the green they realised these two balls had swapped places, sort that out.

This friendly match was played on a lovely day on a well kept golf course. The Burnham players were great to play against, alas it didn't go our way today but the views and the tasty tucker afterwards. A superb day out. I'm sure our John Day team members will have gained a bit more knowledge for the Benton Hall Match.

Many thanks to a Dave Wilson for reporting on the Burnham match
