Inter Club Match v Newton Green - Away - 12th September 2019

Newton Green 6½     Stoke By Nayland    1½

Great golfing weather greeted us on arrival at Newton Green.Later start then usual as we were treated to a full English breakfast. But was this a ploy to upset our guys who usually make do with a piece of toast or a couple of weetabix?

Match 1   Not much to report here but Ian commented on what an enjoyable game played in a good, sociable manner. Opposition captain Harry had to admit Ian played very well on the back nine. Surprisingly no comment about his handicap. All square after 17 so an honourable draw agreed. Match halved

Match 2  Your reporter and Roy were involved in a tight game. Two down after 3 holes managed to get back to all square when Roy birdied the par 3 11th only for Opposition Mike to sink a 45’ put from off the green on 12. Two down with two to play I managed to win 17 with my shot and Roy made an outrageous par on 18 holing from off the green. Match halved.

Match 3   Ed & Neil had to concede local knowledge played a big part in this match. They left it too late to get going and were beaten before they could make their shots count over the last few holes. Lost 3 & 2

Match 4  Things were going well being 2 up after 3 but disaster struck on the fourth when Bob realised Terry had had somehow managed to play Bob’s ball on his 3rd shot to the 1st green! Although they struggled manfully after this debacle Bob was giving too many shots. Lost 1 down

Match 5  Dave & David had a very friendly up and down game but could never manage to get in front.  David’s shoulders started to ache apparently but not disclosed whether this was the strain of carrying his partner. However Dave birdied the 17th to get to all square and as in match 1 an honourable draw was agreed. Match halved.

Match 6  Tony & Brian had a very close game with only one hole in it all the way round. Thier opponents both had two birdies with 5 handicap Steve playing to par and 24 handicap Nic playing to 3 under! Lost 1 down

Match 7  David & John got off to a very slow start. 3 down after 4. Although they managed to get back to 2 down a few times relentless pressure from their opponents told. Lost 4 & 3

Match 8  Andy & David had a tighter game than the score suggests but the Newton pair were always ahead. The match was played in a convivial (Andy’s words), good spirited manner and although Andy played below his handicap this was not good enough. The home pair were tough opponents and dovetailed well. Lost 3 & 1

The course was in very good condition with the greens faster than we are used to at Stoke at present. Despite one of our heavier losses of the season all enjoyed the company of the Newton Green players and the full English. What value for money with a round of golf and cooked breakfast all for £10.
